Layers: Description:

Heavy rainfall occurred across central and southern West Virginia in June 2016 as a result of repeated rounds of torrential thunderstorms. The storm caused major flooding and flash flooding in central and southern West Virginia. Following the storm event, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) hydrographers recovered and documented 422 high-water marks in West Virginia, noting location and height of the water above land surface. Many of these high-water marks were used to create flood-inundation maps for selected communities of West Virginia that experienced flooding in June 2016. This dataset is the mapped inundated area layer for the communities of Kanawha and Clay Counties. This polygon shapefile dataset was created to provide an extent of flood inundation along the Elk River within the communities of Kanawha and Clay Counties, West Virginia. Digital elevation data was used as a reference to determine the polygon line placement. This polygon dataset was created by using high-water mark water-surface elevation values on the land surface and a digital elevation model. The extent of the inundation map is a 45-mi reach of the Elk River in Kanawha and Clay Counties. The HWM elevation data was used to create the flood water-surface raster file. The water-surface raster was the basis for the creation of the final flood inundation polygon and depth layer to support the development of flood inundation map for the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) response and recovery operations.
